African Youth and Civil Society Green growth Hub: From the pandemic to Agenda 2030, Mobilized for Change

On May 31, 2020 was released the African youth and civil society declaration and roadmap against COVID19 and pandemics for a green growth recover in Africa and the in world. It is a document of position and roadmap elaborated and enriched by over 260 organizations from Africa and other continents in the frame of the New Deal for Nature and People Coalition led by African Network of Young Leaders for Peace and Sustainable Development (ANYL4PSD) in partnership with the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). It resorts that the past decade—in particular the COVID-19 crisis—has revealed the systemic nature of risk and the cascading impact of disasters across all three dimensions of sustainable development. Biodiversity loss, land and forest degradation, climate change, and disasters are threatening progress toward peacebuilding and sustainable development. The natural environment is humanity’s first line of defense against many hazards, and actions to advance economic and social development need to address these threats and build resilience including through nature based solutions, sustainable consumption and production practices and accounting for the true value of nature in a manner to build community resilience and leave no one behind.

The 2030 Agenda is rooted in the idea that human development and wellbeing cannot be achieved without simultaneously safeguarding and investing in nature and managing disaster risk in a systemic manner—otherwise development gains will be short lived and unequally distributed. In spite of its challenges, the year 2020 represents a turning point that should be apprehended by African Youth and civil society as an opportunity to voice out threefold and take action for the changes they want to see in the global and African system in the upcoming last decade of implementation of the 2030 agenda. It is the reason why ANYL4PSD and the New Deal for Nature and People Coalition in partnership with WWF have launched the project: “African Youth and Civil Society Green growth Hub: From the pandemic to Agenda 2030, Mobilized for Change”.

The aim of this project is to contributing building better after COVID-19 and realizing the decade of accelerated action, transformative pathways and delivery for sustainable developmentthrough the increased engagement and mobilisation of African youth and Civil Society.

Several activities will be carried out by the New Deal for Nature and People Coalition led by African Network of Young Leaders for Peace and Sustainable Development. New Deal for Nature and people is made up of 300 Civil Society Organizations from all sectors as civil society, media, local elected, business, indigenous people, refugees, IDPs, Faith Based Organizations and startups.
